fred perryBrand History

Fred Perry was born in Stockport, England and he is famous as the last Englishman to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title. Less well known is that before taking up tennis at the age of 18 he was a World table tennis champion, and that he actually won Wimbledon 3 years in a row.

-- Fred Perry--

In 1933 Perry played in the Great Britain team that beat France to win the Davis Cup for the first time in 21 years. Fred Perry was the World’s No. 1 tennis player from 1934 to 1938, and won all 4 Grand Slam singles titles.

Fred Perry collaborated with Tibby Wegner to invent the sweatband in the late1940’s and the pair then went on to launch a sports shirt in 1952 (at Wimbledon) with great success, and the Fred Perry clothing brand was born.

The Fred Perry laurel logo was based on the old Wimbledon symbol, and like Lacoste the brand’s heritage is firmly rooted in it’s tennis history, but both have now gone way beyond that and found an audience in the World of casual fashion. Fred Perry polos have been associated with the Mod scene for years, and with Mod icons Pete Townsend and Paul Weller, and has remained a very British brand while expanding into a global market.
